I saw the latest Will Smith's outing today and i was enthralled by it. although there were several films this year made in the similar genre... like 28 days, and 30 Days of Night, I like this one for the sense of adventure and energy in it. A lot of the things in the movie keep audiences guessing. For example the title I AM LEGEND does not really give you any clue what the movie is about... it could be about the end of the world, and why? Was there a nuclear explosion. And why is he the only survivor? But when I watched the film I was amazed. It has got the zombie element in it. Well this is not your ordinary zombie, which you can push away with a finger. These are supercharged creatures whose body can turn into a battering ram, and who can leap up lamposts in a single bound. Which is good, as it adds to the scary element. Straightaway the danger factor is increased. The movie started interestingly with images of New York deserted and lonely... cars are left all over the place, while the grass continue to grow taller in between the cracks. Suddenly Will Smith's character sprung into the scene in a red sports car and armed with a rifle. Why is he having a ride of his life with his dog? He was going hunting, and belief it or not, now New York city is the roaming ground for a deers - must be someone's bright imagination. Of course they want to introduce the idea of a concreted jungle... made of up abandoned buildings, cars, weeds, and if the place is abandoned long enough, why shouldn't wild animals come back to inhabit the earth. And yet with all his hunting gear, and hundreds of deers galloping in the way, he could not kill a single one. Finally he thought he narrowed one down, only to see a bigger predator, jumping on the prize catch. Lions, lions roam the earth again for a brief minute and they were just making a guest appearance. The monsters in this shows are humans, standing in pack within dark corners of vacant buildings breathing heavily, and adrenalined pumped for action. Just a glimpse of them, will send you to panic station. But this is Hollywood's way of story-telling, throwing in elements like solitude, man's best friend, separation from family and loved ones, scenes of chaos and destruction, revenge, trap... all these are strewn all over the movie. Of course the story of man's survival over the elements with the help of a strange woman, child, and dog and who finally found the cure the save humanity all adds up to the equation of why he is Legend, just like Bob Marley who wanted to save the world through love and music, and whose songs are played throughout the movie. Make no bones about it, films are meant to entertain, and also to enthrall you with the main character's sufferings. Let this be an enjoyable ride.
